Course Objective

This course is to give detailed information related to Marshall and Superpave mix design methods and provide some knowledge of the anticipated differences in the design of asphalt content between the two major compaction processes evaluated.

1   To compare the types of mix design with technical point of view.
2   To illustrate a method for each project
3   To investigate mix designs with advance in technology.
4   To choose available materials and equipments for mix design.
5   To edit the literature data concerning the use of mix design.

2 Asphalt Mixtures Asphalt binder behavior Mineral aggregate behavior Asphalt mixture behavior.
3 Mix design practices General procedures for analyzing a compacted paving mixture. Specific gravity determinations. Density-voids analysis
4 Asphalt specifications Penetration Test, Ductility Test, Softening Point Test, Loss on Heating Test, Flash and Fire Point Test, Spot Test, Solubility Test, Specific Gravity. Currently used asphalt cement specifications Introduction to Superpave asphalt cement specification.
5 Superpave performance graded asphalt cement specification. Superpave binder aging procedures. Dynamic shear rheometer test, rotational viscometer test, bending beam rheometer test, direct tension test
6 Pavement performance in the Superpave binder specification Safety Pumping and handling Permanent deformation Excessive aging Fatigue cracking Low temperature cracking Physical hardening from storage 2. Homework submission and presentations
