Course Objective

The main purpose of the lecture is to outline the basic principles of coastal engineering; To introduce the phenomenon affecting coastal structures; To present the utilization possibilities of coastal areas; To teach the fundamental principles of design procedures for coastal structures and ports as well as coastal zone development

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Ability to identify coastal engineering problems
2   Ability to interpret atmospheric phenomena and interactions among land, sea, and air that occur at the coast
3   Ability to predict human-induced and natural factors that affect coast and coastal structures
4   Ability for determining both qualitative and quantitative features of the forces that influence coastal structures
5   Ability to evaluate processes in the planning of coastal structures and ports
6   Ability to determine and find realistic solutions for the problems on maintenance, repair and reinforcement of coastal structures

2 Air, Sea and Land Interactions; Tides, Currents and Waves; Seasonal and Long-term Fluctuations of Coastal Water Level
3 Wave Mechanics; Linear Wave Theory; Stokes, Cnoidal, and Solitary Waves; Wave Pressure, Wave Energy and Power
4 Wave Transformations in Surf Zone; Wave Shoaling, Refraction, Breaking, Diffraction, Reflection; Wave Run-up
5 Irregular Waves; Wave Statistics and Spectral Analysis; Wind Generated Waves; Estimation of Wave Characteristics from Wind Data; PM Method; SMB Method; CERC Method
