Course Objective

The course aims to give basic knowledge about conservation, evaluation and restoration of historical environment.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Ability to explain the basic concepts about historical environment, conservation and restoration.
2   Ability to comment upon the conservation issues regarding historical environment.
3   Ability to criticize the conservation history of the country and to envision the approaches towards the solutions of the problems of protecting the historical values.
4   Ability to interrelate and compare sites and monuments as elements of historical environment.
5   Ability to interpret conservation laws and principle decisions.
6   Ability to evaluate the work of art within the frame of system of values regarding the detection of the work of art to be protected.
7   Making research about historical environment and ability to present this in visual, written and oral form.
8   Ability to make diductions from findings about historical environment.

1 Introduction to the course, aim, method and contents of the course.
2 Historical Environment and Concept of Conservation. 2.1. Environment and Concept of Historical environment. 2.2. Concept of conservation. 2.2.1. Historical development of the phenomenon of Conservation. 2.2.2.Current concepts related to historical environment. 3 Reasons for conservation of historical environment and aim of conservation. 3.1. Basic approaches in conservation. 3.2. Elements of Historical Environment. 3.2.1. Monuments 3.2.2. 4 Striking problems in the preservation of historic environments. (Problems related to climate change, historical buildings at risk etc.)
5 Technical visit concerning historical urban fabric in Izmir. (May be held in the form of virtual trips in the fall semester of the 2021-2022 Academic Year, depending on the conditions).

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The course is taught in a lecture, class presentation and discussion format.
Visual materials will be used intensively and technical excursions will be made during the course.
Students' active participation in the course is expected.
* Literature research and archive research
* Fieldwork (on-the-spot observations and examinations)

- Conveying through oral and visual presentations.
- On-site observation, examination, discussion within the scope of technical trip
- Development of the ideas which have been suggested through the discussion medium in the classroom & interpretations
- Discussion of publications.

Additionally, question and answer teaching method, game-based learning, an individual teaching method, brain storming, group work will be used.
