Course Objective

This course aims to explain the relations between the formation of the cities and socio-economic and cultural structures and the social and urban truths, rationalities and interactions which are behind the systems of thoughts and movements of culture, in the process of beginning of the sedentism until the modern city in historical context.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Will be able to define the formation processes and rationalities of human settlements (Knowledge)
2   Will be able to explain the interactions of urban space and socio-economic and cultural structure, (Comprehension)
3   Will be able to explain the developments of cities in the historical process (Comprehension)
4   Will be able to explain the interactions of Intellectual and art movements and urban space (Comprehension)

2 Interactions between Ancient Hellenistic, Anatolian and Mesopotamian Civilizations in the fields of art, technique, architecture and urban
3 The art, architecture and city in the Classical and Hellenistic Era
4 Architecture and urban planning in Roman Era The assignments will be given to the students on this week
5 Urban Space in Middle Ages I- In the context of culture and space interaction The Romanesque and Gothic Terms
6 Urban Space in Middle Ages II- The culture, society, architecture and city under the influence of Renessaince and The Baroque Term
7 The End of The Middle Ages- The transformations in the capital accumulation process and Romantism, Neoclassicism movements
8 Midterm Examination
9 Industrial Revolution / emerge of modern cities and new planning approaches (19. Century planning approaches: Hausmann, Utopian Socialists)
10 Bauhauss Movement and its space and design theory
11 The relation of history, space and city concepts under the post-modern movements

This course will be given through lectures. Students will learn topics by reading the papers given to them, listening the lectures and preparing the assignments.
