Course Objective

This course aims to describe the relationship between architectural design and city planning, the architectural design process and design principles of different building types. Furthermore It intends to discuss the relationship between housing types and urban density.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   At the end of the Course The Students can define specifications of the architecture/urban design/city planning which are the part of spatial design/planning discipline
2   will be able to describe the architectural design process,
3   will be list the different types of house and changing density that depends on the types of house buildings
4   will be able to explain form and function relationship in architecture
5   will be able to express factors and principles affecting the building types,
6   will be able to explain the interaction between building and its surroundings.

1 Praxis of spatial design/planning and Architecture Definitions and concepts related to architecture, design and planning relationship.
2 Introduction to the architectural design An analysis of an Architectural Design Process
3 House Types 1_General view A typological approach to house buildings-Introduction to the most common used house building types with quantity and quality specs of them
4 House Types 2_General view A typological approach to house buildings-Introduction to the most common used house building types with quantity and quality specs of them
5 House Types 3_Urban Densities Exemplifying urban density sizes created by the use of housing types
6 House Types 4_Urban Densities Exemplifying urban density sizes created by the use of housing types
7 Midterm examination Multiple choise exam that based on last six weeks of the course
8 Hotels, Motels and Hostels An explanation of general and particular features of accomodation buildings like hotel, motel etc.
9 Health Buildings An explanation of general and particular features of healthcare buildings
10 Office Buildings An explanation of general and particular features of office buildings
11 Socio-culturel Buildings An explanation of general and particular features of socio-cultural buildings like theaters, music halls, religional buildings etc.
12 Delivering the term assignments Submission of the assignments that exemplify the "residential island formations", "housing type choices" and the "urban densities" created by the students in their projects on the project levels they have taken
13 Education Buildings An explanation of general and particular features of education buildings
14 Sport Buildings An explanation of general and particular features of sport buildings like sport halls, stadiums etc.
15 Final session An evaluation on programme and learning outcomes of the lesson

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The course will proceed with the discussion of current examples on the ground created by lectures. Sample field studies chosen by the students from among their own urban planning projects will be requested in the form of "homework" as a reinforcing practice.
