Course Objective

Modernity is in tension with the traditional development processes, following the countries' internal dynamics.

Modernity is criticized the social relations and capital accumulation process as well as because of the power to transform the spatial structure.

Historical areas as a object of permeation process must be also conserved its information.

In this course will focus on transformation process of historical urban areas, and dynamics of this process, and risks on these areas.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   will be able to define reasons for formation of the historical urban centers (Knowledge),
2   will be able to explain economic and social reasons about formation of the historical urban centers (Comprehension),
3   will be able to interpret transformation forms of the historical urban centers (Application),
4   will be able to compare differences about the different spatial formations (Analysis),
5   will be able to criticize threats on historical urban centers (Analysis).

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 First Organized Settlements Established by Mankind. Gobeklitepe: The World's First Temple. An archaeological site in Sanlıurfa.
2 Urban, City, Province, City Center, Basin, Economic Region, Hinterland concepts and development of these concepts in urbanization process. Homework topics will be handed out in this week.
3 The effect of economic models on the way human beings spread, use and form geography. The effect of changes in economic production models on settlement patterns.
4 Change of transportation systems and the effect of different transportation models on production and urbanization processes. The effect of transportation models on urban centers.
5 The impact of social structure, ideological understanding and belief systems on settlement patterns and urban centers.
6 The impact of public administration models, local and / or decentralized forms, state structure and hierarchical functioning on urban macroforms and centers.
7 Exchange of instruments of economic value transfer, trade, clearing and accumulation tools; discussion of the effects on urban macroform and urban centers.
8 Discussion of the effects of developments in technology as well as construction systems and architecture on urban centers.
9 Midterm Exam. Defining the Assignment.
10 Transformation of communication tools. Discussion of the effects of the spreading speed and form of information on the forms of urban uses and the functioning of urban centers.
11 Discussing the capacity of the historical city centers to provide information about the functioning of the whole city. The importance of preservation of historic urban centers in the process of protection of historical environments.
12 Presentation of assignments Students will be required to submit their homeworks

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course will be given through lectures.

Students will learn topics by attending and listening the lectures which supported by visual presentations.

Homework will be given to students in 3rd week and they will be asked to submit their homework to be prepared about the 11th week.

Defining (Knowledge), explaining (Comprehension) will be measured by Homework.
Interpreting (Application) will be measured by Final Examination.
Comparing (Analysis) and criticizing (Analysis) will be measured by Final Examination.
