Course Objective

This studio course introduces students to the fundamental knowledge and technical skills used by urban planners to create, research, analyze, and implement master plans at the city and regional level. The course covers and reviews all the required analytical and quantitative techniques for population, employment and areal land-use projections as well as site selection for master planning.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Comprehend the required legal and administrative knowledge for planning process,
2   Produce all the required quantitative and qualitative information for the planning site,
3   Make site selection decisions for urban and rural land-uses and perform employment, population and areal land-use projections,
4   Interpret the planning site with its local, regional and global environs,
5   Meet the planning standards with planning decisions using all the available spatial, social, and economic data and information,
6   Calculate the requirements for the planning site,
7   Interrogate the adequacy of legal and administrative standards with regard to living standards,
8   Report the planning process,

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Gathering and compiling analytical and spatial data related to the study area. Review of relevant legislation.
2 Transforming the obtained analytical and spatial data into information and synthesis to assist planning. Examination of upper scale plan decisions.
3 Transforming the obtained analytical and spatial data into information and synthesis to assist planning. Examination of upper scale plan decisions.
4 Evaluation of the upper scale plan decisions, which will form the basis for the master zoning plan decisions, and completion of the analysis and synthesis studies.
5 Determination and adoption of planning approaches that will form the basis of master zoning plan decisions.
6 1st Jury
7 Continuing the master development plan studies through the obtained analytical and spatial information and synthesis.
8 Continuation of the master zoning plan studies.
9 Continuation of the master zoning plan studies.
10 Completion of the first drafts of the master development plans.
11 2nd Jury
12 Reviewing master development plans and finalizing the plan decisions.
13 Developing final drawing and presentation techniques.
14 Final Jury
