Course Objective

This course intends to provide information on general mapping and topography; types of maps and their basic characteristics; basic measuring tools; direction, scale, coordinate calculations and place location and section drawing; graphic components of mapping; basic cartographic symbols and reading maps; projections used in map drawing; calculations in mapping, use of GPS (Global Positioning System) and computer-based applications; land-use principles and calculation of leveling.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To define the basic concepts related to mapping,
2   List the basic characteristics of maps, measurement units, basic cartographic symbols and components of mapping,
3   To become skilled in reading maps,
4   To apply land use principles and revisions in terms of leveling
5   To make computer-aided drawing by using measurements through GPS.

1 Definition of maps, types of maps, basic characteristics of maps
2 Measurement units, direction and scale in maps
3 Characteristics of contours, main definitions in plans with contour mapping, general information on contours and slopes, land sections and 3D perception of maps
4 Slope analysis and computer-aided analysis
5 Basic cartographic smybols and map-reading
6 Basic cartographic smybols and map-reading, graphic components of maps and their graphic design
7 Projections used in drawing maps and coordinate systems, place location, naming maps
8 Place location, naming maps andc calculations in mapping
9 Midterm examination
10 Land use principles and leveling I
11 Land use principles and leveling II
12 Land use principles and leveling III
13 Land use principles and leveling IV
14 Homework
15 What is GPS (Global Positioning System) Basic principles and premises
