Course Objective


Introduction to Furnaces utilized in the production processes of metalic and ceramic materials. Classification of technological design and energy efficiency are explained. Informations are given about the selection criteria for refractory materials utilized in furnaces and the properties. The types and production steps of refractories are acquainted.The application area of monolithic and insulation refractories are discussed and the environmental impacts of furnaces and refractories are acquainted.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   to explain the importance of furnaces used for production of materials,
2   to describe basic concepts associated with furnaces and refractories,
3   to describe the principles of choosing, production and quality control of refractories used in furnaces,
4   to discuss parameters to be considered in design of used for refractories,
5   to define basic concepts of environmental problems that may be revealed from furnaces and refractories,
6   to present a report about furnaces and refractories and/or industrial application in writing or orally

3 Classification of refractories, acidic and basic refractories
4 Furnaces utilized in metal production processes,Refractories applied in Furnace constructions
5 Production and properties of basic based refractories based on magnesia,mgnesia cromite,sinterdolomite,and forsterite refractories
6 Furnace efficiency,control and Safety and environmental impact
7 Working principles of ovens
8 Furnaces utilized in ceramic production processes, Refractories applied in Furnace constructions
9 Production and properties of acidic based refractories, silica, fireclay ,high alumina containing refractories
10 Production and properties of acidic based refractories, silica, fireclay ,high alumina containing refractories
11 Improvement of Refractory properties by various additives; carbon,silicium carbid,alumina,titania
12 Production and properties of shaped,shapeless and prefabric refractories- Students presentation
