Course Objective

*Course Objective: The aim of this course is to
Describe amorphous glassy structure of inorganic materials, explain glass and crystal stage, acquaint glass forming conditions, inform about the structure and kinetic modelling,and thermodynamic consepts, familiarize heat treatments, nucleation and crystallization behaviours, immiscibilities and chemical compounds of glasses, explain the properties of glass melts and solids, acquaint the processing methods of amorphous glassy materials and coatings by non traditional methods as of from solutions, gas phases and solid crystal transformations, inform about non oxide glasses, oxide semiconductors and photochromic glasses, introduce Metallic glasses, explain metallic glass structures, forming conditions and properties, describe Sol gel glasses, give information about structures, forming conditions, chemistry, coatings and properties.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To learn amorphous glassy structures, glass forming conditions and structure models
2   To understand the nucleation and crystallization behaviours of glasses
3   To identify immiscibility stages and chemical components of glasses
4   To have knowledge about the properties and testing methods of glass meltings and glass solids,
5   To learn the production methods of amorphous glassy materials by non traditional way
6   To learn metallic glass structures, types, forming conditions and properties
7   To be informed about non oxide glasses, oxide semiconductors, photochromic and coloured glasses
8   To learn sol gel glass formation, structures, chemistry, powder synthesis and coating properties

1 Describe glass amorph and crstals, glass forming conditions, physical and chemical nature
2 Structures models of glass, hypotheses of lattice and crystallites, thermodynamic concepts and kinetic models
3 Glass crystallization, nucleation and crystal growth and speeds, controlled crystallization and glass ceramics
4 Immiscibility, chemical components and colouring of glasses
5 Glass melt properties; viscosity, surface tension, gas contacts
6 Solid glass properties; mechanic, optic, electronic,thermic, chemical durability
7 Midterm exam I.
8 Non traditional production methods of amorphous materials and films; non traditional melting, solid stage transformation
9 Amorphous solid materials and films from solutions; sol gel precipitation, electrolysis decomposition of anodic solutions, gas phase precipitation
10 Metalic glasses, introduction, types, structures and formation theories, meltings, properties
11 Non oxide glasses and amorphous materials, halogenid and chalcogenid glasses, amorph-non metallic elements, amorph carbon
12 Midterm exam II.
13 Sol gel glasses, definition, preparation, chemical reactions, formation, powder syntheses, coating processes and properties
14 Oxide semiconductors, photochromic and coloured glasses
