Course Objective


The aim of this course is to introduce the sudents composite materials that are utilized in a wide variety of applications. This course is composed of three separeted sections as of metal, ceramic and polymer matrix composites. In each section it is aimed to discuss properties of composite materials, their components, production processes and application areas.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Have the knowledge about properties and production processes of ceramic matrix composite (CMC) systems.
2   Learn the production technologies of CMC reinforcing materials.
3   Understand the structural components and their effects on properties of metal matrix composite (MMC) materials.
4   Able to evaluate the microstructural components and manufacturing processes for a MMC material intended for a given application.
5   Understand the structural components and their effects on properties of polymer matrix composites (PMC).
6   Have the knowledge about production processes and application areas of PMC.

1 Introduction to composites; description, grouping, classifying after strengthening and advantageous properties
2 Ceramic matrix composite (CMC) production technologies; continuous/discrete processes, principles of condensation, liguid and vapour methods
3 3.1 Production processes and properties of important CMC systems as of alumina, zirconia and mullite CMC systems 3.2 Properties and processes of alumina silicate glass ceramic CMC s; LAS / MAS SiC systems
4 Production technologies of CMC reinforcing materials, oxide/ none oxide reinforcers
5 Properties and structural constituents of metal matrix composite(MMC) materials
6 Production of MMC materials, manufacturing from liquid phase, compo-casting
7 Manufacturing composite components by infiltration techniques, solid phase processes
8 Microstructure-property relationships in MMC materials
9 Matrix materials in polymer matrix composites (PMC); thermosets and thermoplastics
10 Fillers in PMC; glass, carbon, Bor ve aramid fibers
11 Coupling agents in PMC
12 Production processes of PMC
13 Mechanical properties of composites
14 Technical visit
