Course Objective

The aim of this course is to introduce glass structure and glass forming abilities, explain the required properties of glass forming raw materials and familiarize glassforming reactions, describe the temperature-viscosity relationship of glassphase, acquaint glass cooling curve and procedures, give information about glass production technology, shaping methods and diverse glass types, describe glass defects and glass melting furnaces, give information about the properties and heattreatment of glasses.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To describe the structure of glasses and glassforming and modifying oxides,
2   To acquaint the glass forming raw materials, the occuring reaction stages, and the procedures of melting purification and homogenization,
3   To describe the melting furnaces, heating and ignition systems, interaction between melting and furnace refractory materials, and understand the glass defects
4   To understand the production technology and shaping methods of glasses,
5   To learn the properties of glasses,
6   To understand glass finishing processes and production technology of diverse glass types

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Definition, history, and development of glasses, glassforming - glass modifying-intermediate oxides, and determination of glass transition temperature
2 Glass Temperature-Volume and Temperature- Viscosity diagrams, DTA curves, differences between amorph and crystal structures, long and short, and soft and hard glasses
3 Glassforming oxides, modifying oxides, stabilizing oxides, coloring oxides, opacifiers, oxide/chalcogenide glasses
4 Glass raw materials and additives, preparation of glass batches, chemical reactions and controls, batching reactions, purification and homogenization of glass melts
5 Hoop and chamber melting furnaces, heating and ignition systems of furnaces, melting currents and mobility, corrosion-diffusion-solubility and convection between glass melts and refractory materials
6 Production technology of flatglass ; continuous plate drain, pulling- coulburn, fourcoult, Pittsburgh, floating methods, and production technology of hollow glass ; pressing and blowing machines
7 Special glasses and properties
8 Glass types and their shaping methods ; glass tubes, rods, fiber glass,foam glass, bulb glass, TV-glass, bullet proof glass, photocromic glass
9 Press and moulding types, equipment materials, designs, working principles, defects and controls
10 Glass cooling process, mechanical temporary and permanent stresses, stress relief, cooling programs
11 Mechanisms of strength increasing, Tempering, strengthening, hardening, multilayered security glass, colouring mechanism
12 Students Presentations
13 Glass process defects; on accouth of batches, devitrification, refractory materials, inhomogenity
14 Physical, chemical, mechanical, optical and elastic properties of glasses
