Course Objective

The course is aimed to introduce the structure, properties, the behaviour under different conditions and the application areas of metallic, ceramic and polymeric materials. The course covers atomic and solid structures of materials, imperfections in solids, strengthenning mechanisms in metals, structure property relationships in materials, the methods of material testing, failure and failure mechanisms, phase diagrams of alloys, phase transformation, thermal treatment and use of engineering materials.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To know atomic and crystalline structures of materials,
2   To explain the defects in solids and their effects on properties,
3   To know the diffusion process in solids and carry out diffusion calculations,
4   To know the methods of testing materials and the factors afecting the mechanical propeties of materials
5   To understand the mechanisms leading failure in materials, and the cautions to be
6   To know the constitution and use of equilibrium diagrams of industrial alloys,
7   To know the properties, shaping, treating and the application areas of industrial
