Course Objective

The aim of this course is to adopt the basic design concept and to provide the necessary substructure for students to realize product and process design by considering realistic constraints. By teaching the product and process design stages and methods, the students are aimed to apply these design processes for any functional object design.

Course Contents

1 Introduction of course. Discussion about design concepts.
2 Reasons / constraints that reveal the rationale for the design. Factors affecting product design decisions in firms.
3 The stages of the Product Design Process. Basic principles of Aesthetic and Physical Design. Information about homework.
4 Product design approaches : DFX: Design for Excellence, DFM: Design for Manufacturing, DFA: Design for Assembly, DFMA, DFS: Design for Sustainability, DFRem: Design for Re-manufacturing, DFR: Design for Recycle
5 Tools and methods of Product Design: Quality Function Deployment; Value analysis / engineering, Taguchi Method; Concurrent engineering.
6 Acceptance of the idea: weighted scoring, break-even point, decision tree for product design, sample problems.
7 Life cycle of product; Product-process matrix.
8 Preparation of documents related to the product (Technical drawings, cost documents related to materials, etc.). Discussion on homework studies.
9 Process Design and stages: Process Selection; Product analyzes; Hardware tools selection; Business (micro process) design.
10 Examples for House of Quality. Discussion on homework studies.
11 Application-Textile design example
12 Application-Industrial design / architectural design example
13 Application-A functional textile design example
14 Homework presentations (A functional object design: physical design, aesthetic design, process design, etc.)

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

Homework is given to students within the scope of the course. Homework is expected to perform product and process design studies for a functional product. The design of the same functional object is given to 3-5 students and the students are asked to perform the product design process individually. Homework file should include the identification of the product, the determination of realistic constraints, and the preparation of documents related to the product.In the next stage, it is asked to decide which design to choose by applying decision-making methods and to carry out the work about process design as a team work.This homework file should include product decision making methods, process design, preparation of documents and work order related to the process. In the last week, presentations about designs will be made. Homework note will be given from the report and presentation.
