Course Objective

To provide fundamental design principles of heat exchangers, exchanger selection and rating.

1   Ability to understand work principles of heat exchangers.
2   Ability to calculate overall heat transfer coefficient.
3   Ability to use the effectiveness-NTU method in design.
4   Ability to understand maintenance of the heat exchangers.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction to heat exchanger.
2 Classification of heat exchanger according to heat transfer process and manufacturing.
3 Classification of heat exchanger according to flow arrangement.
4 Design of heat exchangers, determination of the overall heat transfer coefficient, fouling factors.
5 Heat exchanger analysis: use of the log mean temperature difference, special conditions.
6 Heat exchanger analysis: the effectiveness-NTU method.
7 Midterm exam 1
8 Compact heat exchangers, properties and design conditions of compact heat exchangers.
9 Maintenance and cleaning of heat exchangers tested and operated of heat exchanger after cleaning.
10 Pressure losses calculation of heat exchangers.
11 Heat exchangers designed for special purpose.
12 Midterm exam 2.
13 Standards of heat exchangers and material selections.
14 Standards of heat exchangers and material selections.
