Course Objective

Objective of this course is to introduce equipment, blasting agent and blasting techniques used in open pit mining as well as to teach method selection, excavation, transportation and water drainage subjects

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To gain ability to chose open pit mining method and planning of pit outlines
2   To be able to define explosives and be able to plan drilling-blasting operations
3   To analyse excavation and haulage systems of open pit mining
4   To select open pit mining method and ability to do capacity calculations
5   To gain ability to do water drainage plan and projection
6   To analyse the environmental effects of open pit mining and be capable of taking necessary precautions

Course Contents

1 Introduction of open pit mining, advantage and disadvantages against underground methods, variations of stripping ratios
2 Definition of slope angles and variations, methods of defining limits of open pit and underground
3 Open pit mine design
4 Cut-off, cut-off application, selection initial pit location, bench height and width selection
5 Introduction of drilling machinery and classification of drilling methods
6 Definition of blasting agents, classification and properties
7 Blasting equipment, Definition of blast pattern
8 Calculation of blast geometry
9 Vibration and air shocks, sample application of a blasting
10 Excavation and loading in open pit mining
11 Technical properties of rope excavators, dragline, bucket wheel excavator, hydraulic excavator, wheel loaders, capacity calculations and auxiliary equipment
12 Haulage methods in open pit mining, introduction of railway, trucks, belt conveyors, air transportation, capacity definition
13 Overburden removal techniques in open pit mining, sample applications, economic evaluations of open pit mining methods
14 Water drainage in open pits, recultivation, marble technology
