Course Objective

This is a specialised degree in economic geology designed to update the knowledge and skills required by geoscientists for the exploration and exploitation of mineral deposits.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Use the modern methods of geology and different disciplines of geology in understanding of a mineralisation.
2   Categorize the ore deposits according to different geological and geochemical criters.
3   Assess the differences between the subtypes of ore deposits and compare them with eachother.
4   Define lithological, tectonic, mineralogical and geochemical features between different types of ore deposits.
5   Sketch and map the essential geological features of an ore deposit and related alteration zonation in different scales.
6   Collaborate with different disiplines during e,ther in exploration or in operation of a mineralisation.

1 Classification of ore deposits, factors that determinate the feasibility of ore deposits,
2 Orthomagmatic Deposits related to Mafic-Ultramafic Intrusions
3 Ore deposits related to felsic to intermediate rocks; I and S type magmas, depth of emplacement, water content, ore content
4 Greisen systems, greisenisation processes, greisens related mineral deposits
5 Skarn Deposits; isochemical contact metamorphism, prograde-metasomatism and replacement, retrograde meteoric fluid influx and main metal precipitation
6 Porphyry Systems, tectonic settings, hydrothermal alteration and mineralisation, models for the formation of porphyry type Cu, Mo and W deposits
7 I. Midterm Exam
8 Epithermal deposits related to subaerial volcanism; classification, transport and deposition of precious metals, boiling, metal zoning
9 Volcanogenic massive sulfide ore deposits, classification, tectonic settings, alteration and mineralisation
10 Ore deposits formed by oxidation and supergene enrichment and lateritization
11 Plaser deposits; environments of placer mineral occurrence. Exploration methods.
12 Sedimentary ore deposits; Ore deposits of lead, zinc, copper and uranium in continental or marine sediments; chemical-sedimentary Fe-Mn deposits.
13 Ore deposits formed by metamorphism, metamorphism of ore deposits.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Lectures: Interactive powerpoint presentations.
Laboratory: Laboratory hours are held by active participation of students as groups under supervision of research assistants.
Field Studies: Related ore deposits will be visited. The study workflow will include field observations and applications.

Assessment Criteria

Mid-term and Final Exam: Mid-term and final exams may include subjects discussed in laboratory and field studies in addition to the lecture/presentation subjects.
Laboratory: A laboratory exam will be held in the last laboratory hour, including subjects given in laboratory sessions (ore-gangue minerals, structures-textures, deposition types and mechanisms)
Field Study: Field Book and text-papers will be collected and checked at the end of the field trip day.
