Course Objective

The course will provide information about the general concepts of transportation modes, highway transportation, geometric design of highways, principles of traffic engineering and about how principles of traffic engineering are used. It will present knowledge about highway pavements and highway materials, fundamental information about construction of highways and failures on pavements.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To tell the technical terms of highway engineering in Turkish/English.
2   To Express the importance of transportation systems in terms of civil engineering.
3   To describe the principals of highway project.
4   Oral/Written statement on a subject about the transportation
5   To interpret the socioeconomic results of the transportation investments.

1 Introduction to transportation engineering, modes of transportation, general features of highway transportation
2 Geometric design of highways, sight distances, passing and stopping sight distances
3 Field surveys and studies, reconnaissance survey
4 Preliminary study, final layout, design speed
5 Location of centerline, horizontal and vertical curves, superelevation design
6 Longitudinal profile and cross-sections
7 Volume calculations, cost estimation analysis
8 Principles of traffic engineering, definitions, traffic counts and surveys
9 Level of service, capacity of highways
10 Highway pavements, rigid pavements and flexible pavements
11 Highway materials, asphalt and asphaltic mixtures, concrete and concrete making materials
12 Construction of highways, construction of embankments, compaction and rollers
13 Construction of pavements, distress conditions of pavements and failure types of pavement
