Course Objective

In the course content, the following issues are explained to civil engineering candidates: Introduction to structural systems of traditional and modern engineering structures, conceptual and technical knowledge about structural system design, to give detailed information about principles of structural system design, investigation and evaluation of different structural systems on example structures.

1   To give information about structural system concept, historical period and classification criteria
2   Explanation of general conditions for structural systems and material facilities
3   Investigation of different structural system choices in point of utilization and evaluation of results for solving utilization problems
4   Sustainability concept for structural systems, examples from the world
5   Handling of high technology structural systems

Course Contents

1 Introduction, description of structure, history of structural systems, historical development of historical and modern structural systems
2 Structural system concept, what is the structural system, structural system components
3 Loads acting on the structural systems, load-force relationship, external force-internal force relationship, components of internal forces, basic stress conditions
4 Traditional and modern structural materials, behavior of structural materials under internal forces
5 Elements of structural systems, cables, one dimensional elements, surface elements
6 Basic structural elements and load bearing relations, functional problems
7 Principles of structural system design, convenience to usage functionality, balance, stability, resistance, economy, esthetic and resistance concepts.
8 Masonry systems, skeleton systems
9 Lattice systems
10 Suspended-stretching structural systems
11 Membrane bearing systems, pneumatic bearing systems
12 Principles of structural system design for RC structures (Elements of structural systems, parameters influencing to structural system design )
13 Principles of structural system design for RC structures (Irregularities)
14 Principles of structural system design for RC structures (Damages and precautions)
