Course Objective

The purpose of this course is to inform the students about the subject of the ground improvement, which has an important place in Geotechnical Engineering. In this way, the course aims to present the techniques for the improvement of the soil bearing capacity
and to guide the students for the selection of the appropriate ground improvement technique, which they may be faced in practice.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To comprehend the importance of compression concept in terms of geotechnical application.
2   To be able to distinguish superficial compression techniques and equipments.
3   To be able to determine the difference between deep compression techniques.
4   Choosing the method and technique of improvement according to the ground problem.
5   To be able to calculate the improvement in sitting and carrying power by using improvement methods.
6   To provide appropriate techniques for quality control and quality assurance.
7   To be able to prepare a report describing a chosen ground improvement method.

1 General Introduction; What is ground improvement techniques, brief intro
2 Vertical drains and surcharge
3 Modified and Standard Proctor Test in the laboratory
4 Deep compaction in the cohesionless soils
5 Introduction to dynamic compaction; History, device setup and test criteria
6 Vibration techniques (Vibro stone column application)
7 Performing the compaction test on different cement ratios on the laboratory.
8 Ground stabilization using cement injection
9 Jetgrout theory and applications
10 Rapid impact compaction
11 Performing the compaction test on different lime ratios on the laboratory
12 The lime and cement column application in the field
13 Insitu soil mixing, compaction piles and reinforced soil applications
14 The presentations of the laboratory works

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The courses will be conducted in the class and will be supported by presentations. The students will be informed about the topics before the class, so they will have brief information about each week s topic. Three laboratory works will be performed in course
period in order to represent the some of the ground improvement techniques in laboratory. The reports and presentation of the laboratory work will be presented by the students.

Assessment Criteria

Learning Outcomes 1, 2, and 6: Will be evaluated by the mid and final exam
Learning Outcomes 2, 3, 4, and 5: Will be evaluated by laboratory work , report and presentation.

The participation and laboratory work will be considered on the evaluation. At the end of the laboratory work, a report has to be prepared and represented.
