Course Objective

This course aims to provide the knowledge about the principles of highway design, capacity of urban-suburban roads, geometric characteristics of highway and role of transportation planning in civil engineering

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To describe the properties of human, vehicle and road which are the main parameters of transportation
2   To Express the importance of transportation systems in terms of civil engineering.
3   To describe the principals of highway project.
4   Literature investigation of relationship between transportation and human-vehicle characteristics.
5   Classification of highway capacity and the level of service.
6   Demonstration of design principles of highway geometrical elements.

1 Introduction, the historical development of road design, transportation modes
2 General definitions related to highway transportation
3 Types of resistance on moving vehicles, passing sight distance, stopping sight distance
4 Capacity and level of service, peak hour factor
5 Capacity analysis of multi-lane highways
6 The road location study, reconnaissance survey, topographic survey, setting-out
7 Economic comparison
8 Horizontal curves, single curves, compound curves, reverse curbs
9 Superelevation and its application, transition curves
10 Properties of ground profile, properties of grade line
11 Parabolic vertical curves
12 Earthworks, properties of subgrades, cut and fill applications
13 The adverse effects of water on highway infrastructures, drainage applications
14 Special applications at highways
