Course Objective

1: To understand the principles of optical communications
2: To understand signal propagation in optical fibres
3: To understand the key components of a lightwave communication system
4: To understand the noise sources in optical communication
5: To learn the optical physics for the modeling of optical communication links
6: To learn about mathematical methods that help determine the bit error rate in terms of system parameters.
7: To be able to choose the components of a specific optical communication link

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students will be able to analyze an optical communication link.
2   Students will be able to state the different components of an optical transmission link.
3   Students will be able to use different methods and devices for the detection and demodulation of light
4   Students will learn about photoconductors, photodiodes, phototransistors, and receiver systems
5   Students will be able to use obtained formulas for the optimization of fiber parameters for a communication system.
