Course Objective

The aim of this course is to understand operation and designing principles of electric power distribution systems and protection of distribution networks.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Ability to understand basic components and operation principles of electric distribution networks.
2   Ability to understand voltage drop and power loss calculations in distribution systems.
3   Ability to understand network faults and short circuit current calculations.
4   Ability to understand protection of electric distribution systems.
5   Ability to understand application of capacitor to distribution systems.
6   Ability to understand load modelling and characteristics in distribution systems.

1 Introduction and basic principles of distribution system planning and automation.
2 Load models and characteristics.
3 Transformers in distribution systems.
4 Primary and secondary distribution systems.
5 Voltage drop and power loss calculations.
6 Application of capacitor to distribution systems.
7 Symmetrical short circuit calculations and analysis.
8 Midterm Exam
9 Circuit breaker and fuse selection.
10 Symmetrical components and sequence networks.
11 Unsymmetrical faults calculations.
12 System protection components, current and voltage transformers.
13 Overcurrent relays, directional relays,
14 Impedance relays, differential relays.
