Course Objective

This course aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of climate change and its impact on the environment. Students will learn about the scientific basis of climate change, its drivers, consequences, and potential solutions. The course will focus on conducting assessments of climate change's effects on various environmental aspects, identifying priorities, and addressing key concerns to foster sustainable development. Prospective students will also collect fundamental knowledge about the conceptual and political development of climate change related strategies and policies at various levels of decision-making and governance structures.

2 Addressing climate change phenomenon at the transect of environmental sustainability
3 Climate change science and assessment methods
4 The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), its acts and contributions
5 Climate models and projections for the future; Data collection and analysis methods for climate change assessments
6 Impacts of climate change on biodiversity; Vulnerability and adaptation of ecosystems
7 Impacts of climate change on water resources and quality; Sustainable water management; water scarcity and drought
8 Mid-Term Exam; student projects/assignments distributions
9 Energy and Carbon Footprint: The role of energy production in climate change; Climate policies for mitigating the carbon impact
10 Urban heat island effect and climate adaptation in cities; Green infrastructure and urban planning for resilience
11 Agricultural impacts of climate change; Risks on Food Security
12 Climate change assessments within the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem (WEFE) Nexus
13 Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) against climate change

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

All registered students are expected to attend the lectures. Lecture presentations are made during lecture hours and hand-outs are distributed to the attendees. Exams and homework/presentation assignments are basically used for evaluating and grading student proficiencies.
