Course Objective

The purpose of the course is to provide knowledge on global energy and environmental problems and basic information on sustainable energy technologies. Different types of technologies, their operation principles, materials, manufacturing techniques, advantages and challenges will be discussed. The course will cover topics on several renewable and alternative energy conversion and storage technologies. Specifically, solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, hydrogen, fuel cell and battery technologies will be covered. The course will also introduce the analysis of sustainable energy systems on macro level as well as their environmental impacts.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To help the students to appreciate the low or zero-emission methods for energy conversion
2   To help the students to conduct basic calculations on the design and performance assessment of sustainable energy technologies
3   To help the students to be aware of global energy and environmental problems as well as the potential solutions to alleviate their effects.
