Course Objective

The main goal of the course is for students to critically interpret the formation of urban space and the policies implemented on urban space by making use of social theories. Themes such as urban communities and neighborhoods, urban differentiation, segregation and inequalities, social movements, public space, gentrification, gender and sexuality, urban subjectivity, urban culture and identity, reflections of globalization on urban space are analyzed with the views of theorists from different schools of thought such as Karl Marx, Georg Simmel, Walter Benjamin, Louis Wirth, Richard Sennett, Henri Lefebvre, and Pierre Bourdieu so that students are equipped with a critical point of view in evaluating urban policies

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to use social theory critically in interpreting the city.
2   To be able to define the basic issues in urban sociology.
3   To understand the similarities and differences in the ways different schools approach the city
4   To be able to critically evaluate the issues that form the basis of urban policies.
