Course Objective

The aim of the course is to provide the students with theoretical concepts on an advanced level as well as empirical knowledge. The course will introduce the students to recent developments in culture and heritage as touristic products.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understand the importance of the use of history and its part in maintaining and creation of local and national cultural identities to perceive tourism not only sea-sand-sun but also a cultural phenomenon (knowledge & comprehension)
2   Identify recent theoretical and empirical developments in the field of cultural tourism to recognize its importance in national and local identities (knowledge & comprehension)
3   Appreciate the historical context for travel and different forms of consumption of culture to be familiar with the attributes of nations and local identities (knowledge & comprehension)
4   Understand the conflicting issues relating to the creation of and management of heritage and cultural tourism to adapt to their vocational knowledge (knowledge & comprehension)
5   Demonstrate an understanding of appropriate concepts and terminology to adapt to their vocational knowledge (application)
6   Critically evaluate tourism policies, strategies and practice with a perception of a professional tourism staff member (application)

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

Students will be assessed on their knowledge of concepts and theories through multiple choice and problem based quizzes each week. These will add upto their Midterm Exam grade.
Students will be assessed on their knowledge of concepts and theories through a problem based essay writing exam in the Final exam.
Each group member is expected to work on case studies provided by the instructor and discuss the findings and the results with the rest of the groups
