Course Objective

The aim of this course is to the help the students to understand fundamental HR practices, methods, topics that would be helpful in making future HR decisions and provide useful and accurate information on HR-related responsibilities and personnel management by focusing on practical applications, concepts, and techniques can be used in business.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

0   At the end of this course the students are expected to be able to:
1   Explain what human resource management (HR) is and how managers can use HR concepts and techniques.
2   Prepare and write job descriptions, including summaries, accountabilities, job requirements, and job specifications using both the Internet and traditional methods.
3   Demonstrate understanding of the main techniques used in employment planning and forecasting.
4   Design and develop a help wanted ad.
5   Demonstrate understanding of the tests can be used for employee selection, and how to use them.
6   Describe and illustrate how to go about identifying training requirements.
7   Perform an effective appraisal interview.
8   Demonstrate understanding of the employee s manager s and employer s career development roles.

Assessment Criteria

"Students will;
1. Clearly enumerate the main functions of HRM and indicate at least 10 techniques used in HRM.
2. Conduct a job analysis by observing and interrogating an employee, and subsequently write a job description using appropriate job description format and terminology (Individual Assignment #1).
3. Specify the main methods used in workforce planning and forecasting.
4. Critique examples of a good and a bad job advertisement according to the "A.I.D.A." principles, and make recommendations closest to the ideal (Individual Assignment #2).
5. Clearly distinguish between structural and unstructured job interviews, and identify typical questions for both types.
6. Define the process and fundamentals of training.
7. Examine and discuss the most important factors that adversely affect performance appraisal interviews.
8. Explain how promotions and transfers can be carried out more effectively.
9. Explain in detail how salary levels, incentive plans, and social benefits should be structured."
