Course Objective

Students enrolled in this course will acquire the skills necessary to safely navigate a vessel on both coastal waters and on the high seas.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. The basic navigational information is learned by students.
2   2. Magnetic and gyro compass can be used by students.
3   3. All navigational charts can be used and in these charts can be corrected by students.
4   4. Students can obtain fix position by using different fixing methods.
5   5. Students can make the passage plan.
6   6. Students have particular information about lighthouse and buoys.

Course Contents

1 Definition of navigation, Basic information about the shape of the world and coordinates
2 General information about the tools and equipment used in navigation, maps, and publications, Classification of map projection systems, characteristics of Equatorial Mercator maps
3 Distance and direction, Measuring distance on a map and calculating distance
4 Rhumb line and great circle track, Route and bearing (relative, true)
5 Finding direction at sea, taking bearings and applying them to the map
6 Compasses, Magnetic compass, compass reading, degree and bearing systems
7 Earth's magnetic field and the magnetic field generated on the ship, P, Q, and R forces, Natural and artificial magnetic deviation
8 Structure of the magnetic compass, errors, corrections, Gyrocompass, structure, operation, errors, corrections, Determining compass error, applying to routes and bearings
9 Position lines and position circles (Bearing - Distance), transit position line and plotting on the map
10 Methods of finding position in coastal navigation, Fix, R.Fix, E.P and M.P.P positions plotted on the map, c) Method of finding position with R.Fix, double-angle method, Safe navigation methods without a fix
11 Information obtained from maps, light lists, and other publications, Symbols and abbreviations used on charts
12 Characteristics of Ligths and Buoys
13 Organization of charts and publications, chart folio systems, Notices to Mariners, correction of charts and publications
