Course Objective

The main objective of this course is to provide the students with planning, coordination and communication skills according to international regulations during the search and rescue operations at sea.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students shoud have knowledge of search and rescue operations. 2   Students should have information about planning search and rescue operations. 3   Students should have information about the coordination of search and rescue operations. 4   Students should have information about the communication techniques during search and rescue operations.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description 1 General Information. 2 Chain of command and organisational requirements used in search and rescue operations. 3 Sequence of action to be taken upon sighting or receiving a distress signal or a call for assistance. 4 Maritime communication techniques applicable to search and rescue operations. 5 Awareness and understanding of the role of a vessel's master when involved in search and rescue operations as described in the IAMSAR. 6 Search and rescue techniques and procedures. 7 Search and rescue techniques and procedures. 8 Mid Term Exam 9 Types of search patterns and their applications. 10 Types of search patterns and their application. 11 Effects on vessel handling of wind and currents. 12 Constant rate of turn techniques. 13 Provide leadership as a member of the bridge team when assisting in search and rescue operations. 14 Monitor and anticipate hazards and risks that may arise during search and rescue operations and take appropriate action. 15 General Evaluation. 16 Final Exam.
