Course Objective

The course concentrates heavily on wooden boat construction and repair but also gain practical experience and knowledge in fitting out both GRP and steel hulls.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To understand the proper use of wood and G.R.P. (glass reinforced plastics)
2   To cost work, how to plan and control cash flow
3   Using basic boatbuilding hand and power tools and woodworking machines competently and safely
4   To make the students aware of their ability
5   To help students develop skills in planning a substantial, long-term project, deal with the concomitant frustrations and develop patience.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Materials and Tools, Making a wide variety of straight and angled joints and scarphs
2 Cut out shapes accurately
3 Correctly identify woods used in boatbuilding
4 To Recognise and to use appropriate screws and fastenings
5 Matching appropriate woods to make straight and curved items of boat joinery, including skylights, ladders and angled steps
6 Producing glass fibre mouldings
7 Mid-Term Exam
8 Recognising faults in GRP laminating
9 Making small glass fibre mouldings
10 Shaping and fitting wood cupboards, galley units, chart tables, bunk fronts etc. into position in boat hulls
11 Building small rowing and sailing dinghies
12 Planning, setting out, and laying new and replacement decks in teak and other woods, on both new and old boats
13 Joining both natural, synthetic and wire ropes, recognising, selecting and making up appropriate rope to suit specific purposes on a boat
14 Understanding paint properties and types - filling, rubbing down and preparing surfaces - applying one and two-pack paints and varnishes - applying paints and coatings to produce the highest quality of finishes.
