Course Objective

The purpose of the course is to get the students of higher religious education have the skill to read and understand the literary and cultural texts written in Ottoman Turkish and to make use of these sources.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Distinguish primar and additional letters in Ottoman Turkish words of Arabic origin
2   Give satisfactory information about Ottoman Turkish nouns, verbs, prepositions, infinitives.
3   Read printed and hand-written texts selected for various periods
4   The ability to make the etymological analysis of words of Arabic and Persian origin in our language
5   The ability to acquire the basic grammatical knowledge such as adjective and noun phrases, the imperative, sentence structure in Ottoman Turkish.

Course Contents

1 Types of Writing: Handwriting and Printedfont
2 The numerical values of digits and letters (Ebced account)
3 Arabic-derived words: Basic spelling features
4 Words of Persian origin: Basic spelling features
5 Arabic subordinatives, subordinatives have got four, five and six words.
6 Using Arabic compound nouns and compoud adjectives in subordinatives.
7 Using Arabic compound adjectives with Turkish auxiliary verbs.
8 Midterm exam
9 Sound changes of Arabic words. Arabic prepositions
10 Examples of literary works in the first period (Yunus Emre, Ahmed Fakih Ashik Pasha etc.)
11 Examples of literary works of the Middle period (Suleyman Chelebi, Ashikpashazade, Niyazi-i Misri, etc.)
12 Examples of literary works in the new period (Omar Sayfaddin, Namik Kemal, Ziya Pasha, etc.)
13 Some examples of manuscripts
14 Some examples of manuscripts
15 Final exam
