Course Objective

A course examining Protogeometric and Geometric periods in the Aegean Basin between 12th to 7th centuries B.C.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   At the end of this course, student will gain following competences: describing principal working areas of the archaeological sciences,
2   Analyzing Protogeometric and Geometric Greek archaeology which are fundamental for general Classical Archaeology,
3   Distinguishing the ancient geography of Aegean Basin,
4   Identification of Aegean and western Anatolian Iron Ages,
5   Explaining interregional and overseas exchanges in the eastern Mediterranean during the Iron Ages.

1 Historical geography and topography of Aegean Basin.
2 Terminology.
3 Archaeology of the Aegean Basin in Bronze Ages.
4 Archaeology of the Aegean Basin in the Early Iron Age.
5 Beginning of Protogeometric Period.
6 Field Work I: Archaeological Museum of Izmir as well as Museum of History and Art of Izmir.
7 Protogeometric Ceramics.
8 Midterm exam
9 Beginning of Geometric Period.
10 Geometric Ceramics.
11 Geometric Sculpture.
12 Invitation of Scripture in Greek Culture and Homer.
13 Evaluation of the previous classes
14 Discussion of the previous classes
15 Preparation for the exams
16 Final exam
