Course Objective

The aim of this course is to critically examine and analyze language and language use; in this context, the main concepts of the subject, ideology, power, dominance, as well as key terms that are important in terms of this theory and methodology, are emphasized and sample analyses are carried out on different texts, thus enabling students to gain awareness of the thoughts, expressions and social effects that are explicitly and/or implicitly coded in texts.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   the student is expected to be able to explain the difference between Discourse Analysis and Critical Discourse Analysis
2   the student is expected to be able to define the basic terms of the theory and method of Critical Discourse Analysis
3   the student is expected to be able to illustrate the basic terms used in Critical Discourse
4   the student is expected to be able to analyze overt ideas and expressions in different genres within the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis
5   the student is expected to be able to analyze implicit ideas and expressions in different genres within the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis
6   the student is expected to be able to critically interpret and discuss the findings obtained from the texts analyzed within the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis Approach

4 Discourse and social context: Social identity, social roles, institutions and ideology
5 Discourse and social context:sign, context and meaning
6 Discourse and social context: reference, identity and role; ideological square
7 Mid-term exam
8 Language use: socially shared knowledge, mutual knowledge
9 Point of view, position, and attitude
10 Explicit and/or implicit writer's/speaker's stance; Intertextuality
11 Critical look at rhetorical devices and the use of figurative language
12 Construction of social identity:national and ethnic identity
13 Construction of social identity: gender identity
14 Politeness, power, and solidarity
15 The discourse of prejudice and political correctness
16 Final exam
