Course Objective

This course aims at providing comparative information about the generative-transformational theories which emerged after 1950s and the functional approaches which emerged during 1970s, and administer a discussion about different philosophical bases and motivations which laid the foundations of these theories.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Define structuralist, generative-transformational and functional theories in linguistics
2   Discuss the philosophical foundations of these theories
3   Address the main approaches of these theories to language
4   Evaluate what differences there are between the generative-transformational theories and functional approaches
5   Criticize the deficient aspects of generative and functional theories in explaining linguistic phenomena.
