Course Objective

Aims of this course are to teach radiation sources, interactions of different radiation types with matter and radiation detection methods and to provide an introduction to radiation physics.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Defines the basic concepts of radiation physics.
2   Classifies different types of radiation and explains their sources.
3   Explain the interaction mechanisms of different types of radiation with matter.
4   Calculates the range of heavy and lightly charged particles in material environments.
5   Explain the interaction mechanisms of photons with matter.
6   Computes the photon attenuation coefficients of the materials.
7   Explains the measurement methods of different types of radiation.
8   Determines the appropriate measurement methods for the type, energy and activity of radiation.
9   Compares the advantages and disadvantages of different radiation detectors.

1 Introduction to the course: Subject of radiation physics, basic radioactivity concepts
2 The structure of matter and atomic radiation (X-rays)
3 The structure of the atomic nucleus
4 Nuclear radiation (Alpha particles, beta particles, gamma rays)
5 Radioactive decay law
6 Interaction of heavily charged particles with matter
7 The interaction of electrons with matter
8 The interaction of photons with matter
9 MIDTERM
10 Methods of Radiation Detection Passive detectors (track detectors)
11 Methods of Radiation Detection Active detectors (Gaiger-Muller counter, semiconductor detectors, scintillation detectors)
12 Count statistics Radioactive decay law, binomial distribution, poisson distribution and normal distribution
13 Uncertainties in measurement results
14 Counting radioactive samples Energy resolution and dead time
