Course Objective

To teach the structure of atom and molecules, energy levels, electromagnetic transitions, molecular bonding, atomic and molecular spectroscopy.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to explain the energy levels and spectra of one-electron atoms. 2   To be able to express the behavior of atoms under the influence of external electric and external magnetic fields. 3   To be able to explain electron configuration and angular momentum couplings in many-electron atoms. 4   To be able to explain the concepts related to electron spin, nuclear spin and atomic spectroscopy. 5   To be able to explain molecular structure and molecular spectroscopy methods. 6   To be able to explain nuclear magnetic resonance, electron spin resonance and lasers issues.

Week Subject Description 1 Early atomic models and basic concepts 2 Basic principles of Quantum Mechanics 3 Energy levels of one-electron atoms, selection rules and spectra of one-electron atoms 4 Alkaline atoms 5 Electron spin and Fine Structure of one-electron atoms 6 Two-electron atoms: Ground state and excited states 7 Many-electron atoms: Hund's Laws and ground states of atoms, Angular momentum couplings, Excited states of atoms, selection rules and atomic spectra 8 Midterm 9 X-Rays and the inner shells of atoms, Moseley's law, absorption of X-Rays and Photoelectron spectroscopy 10 Interaction of atoms with external magnetic and electric fields: Zeeman, Anomalious Zeeman and Paschen-Back effects, energy level splittings and allowed transitions 11 Nuclear spin and hyperfine structure, hyperfine structure in external magnetic field 12 Introduction to molecular physics: Bonding types, molecular structure, bonding and antibonding orbitals, hybridization 13 Rotational and vibrational energy levels of diatomic molecules, rotational and vibrational spectra of diatomic molecules 14 Nuclear magnetic resonance, Electron spin resonance and Lasers
