Course Objective |
A substantial part of the acquisition and mastery of any language involves competence in spoken communication. This first-year elective course will offer students approaches, strategies, and exercises that will help them gain confidence in public speaking. As the old saying goes, many people fear public speaking more than death; as such, the first part of any public speaking course is to move students beyond fear. They will understand that public speaking is difficult for everyone, and presents unique sets of challenges even for those who are experienced and fluent in written English. This course is important because students, throughout their university courses, will be required to give presentations on research topics and participate in class discussions. For students planning to pursue graduate education in Türkiye or abroad, public speaking becomes even more critical, as students may want to attend symposia. Many students must also pass oral exams in their graduate fields of study. For students entering the workforce, public speaking is an aspect of practically every job, from hospitality and sales to business, management, and, of course, teaching. Although we live in a digital age, one in which text is a part of daily life, face-to-face communication will always constitute a significant component of the human experience. |
