Course Objective

To be able to harmonization to a given soprano and bass melody, able to harmonic analyze, able to comprehend and put into practice accompany models on the piano.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Builds cadences and plays on the piano.
2   Builds major seventh, minor seventh, diminished seventh and dominant seventh chords.
3   Writes bass figures of major seventh, minor seventh, diminished seventh and dominant seventh chords in root position and inversions.
4   Makes harmonic progression from dominant seventh chord to tonic chord.
5   Uses dominant seventh chords in the soprano and bass part harmonizing.
6   Analyzes some sample pieces.

Course Contents

1 Review of the rules about the triads in the harmonic progression.
2 Using the four-six triads in harmonization.
3 Using the four-six triads in harmonization.
4 The bass and soprano part harmonization by using the root position and inversions.
5 The cadences.
6 Playing cadences on the piano.
7 Harmonization studies all about the learned topics.
8 Midterm exam and harmonization studies.
9 Major-minor seventh chords, diminished seventh chords, dominant seventh chords.
10 The inversions of the dominant seventh chords and figuring the inversions.
11 Using dominant seventh chords in harmonic progression
12 Using dominant seventh chords in root position in the bass and soprano part harmonizing.
13 Using inversions of dominant seventh chords in the bass and soprano part harmonizing.
14 Analyzing a sample piece about learned topics.
15 Final exam.
