Course Objective

To give students essential theoretical and applied skills regarding contrapuntal techniques.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Define set of rules concerning essential counterpoint technique and apply them in written form.
2   Realize one-against-one and two-against one and four-against-one examples in two and three voices.
3   Realize one-against-one, two-against-one and four-against-one examples in three voices.
4   Execute four voice examples using syncopation, mixed rhythms and florid counterpoint.
5   Apply one-against-one and two-against-one in four voices.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Lectures
In-class lectures focus on the rules and methods of two-, three- and four- voice counterpoint and examples written on music staff board by the instructor. Students are asked for realizing these counterpoint examples individually.

Homework Assignments
Homework assignments aim that students thoroughly comprehend the subject matter covered in-class lectures and consist of examples prepared by the instructor.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

EXAMS: Two exams (midterm and final) will be held during and at the end of the semester; a student will earn 100% of his/her grade through these exams. Questions will include topics covered in classes. Students are required to answer the questions on exam sheets handed out by the instructor.

Assessment Criteria: Written exams and homework assignments aim at evaluating whether or not a student has achieved theoretical and applied proficiency as described in Learning Outcomes.
