Course Objective

The aim of this course is to teach undergraduate students clinical observation, interventional and non-interventional applications of the Department of Periodontics.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. Controls infection in the periodontology clinic
2   2. Can communicate appropriately to the patient's cognitive and cultural level.
3   3. Knows how to make a detailed presentation about the patient by obtaining anamnesis and written and verbal consent regarding the patient's general health and dental problems.
4   4. Learn and practice performing a detailed intraoral and extraoral examination of the patient.
5   5. Learns and knows how to examine the patient in a basic way. 5. Learns and knows how to examine the patient in a basic way.
6   6. Knows the steps of periodontal examination and treats the patient.
7   7. Knows interventional and non-interventional practices in the clinic

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 1. Ensuring infection control in the clinic, providing communication skills with the patient, clinical observation of intraoral and extraoral methods
2 2. Clinically being able to apply the steps of periodontal disease diagnosis, measuring probing pocket depth, clinical attachment loss, and bleeding values on probing
3 3. Observing rare periodontal conditions, clinical application of prophylaxis, clinical application of occlusion control, clinical observation of furcation problems
4 4. Clinical observation of clinical application of being able to receive support in tooth surface cleaning and root surface smoothing, making appropriate application movements and clinical application of patient motivation in tooth brushing technique, dental floss use, dental floss use and interdental brush use

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

1. The practice course will be given to the entire class in groups.

2. Each group will receive a total of 4 weeks (80 hours) of practice training in the periodontology clinic throughout the academic year.

Assessment Criteria

1. Before each lesson, be present in the clinics during class hours with the necessary educational materials for that lesson
2. Be present in the clinic with appropriate clothing for infection control
3. Comply with sterilization/disinfection, cross-infection rules and regular and complete use of materials within the clinical setting
4. Be able to communicate with the patient verbally and in writing, cognitively and culturally
5. Be able to obtain a complete verbal and written general and dental health history from patients
6. Be able to perform general intraoral and extraoral examinations of patients regarding dental complaints
7. Be able to observe, assist and apply interventional and/or non-invasive clinical practices to patients

Attendance at 80% of practical classes is mandatory.
Being successful in the practices is a condition for taking the exam.
The qualifications of the practices and the conditions for success have been determined.
