Course Objective

To teach detailed anatomy of gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum and alveolar bone; the concepts of periodontal pocket, attachment and dental plaque formation.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. Student describes the structure of gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum and alveolar bone, and tells their functions and tells the differences between healthy and diseased periodontal tissues
2   2. Student describes the composition of the saliva, tells its functions, describes xerostomia, and tells the reasons of xerostomia.
3   3 Student defines dental plaque, explains its importance, lists the types, the formation steps, and the factors playing role in formation.
4   4 Student explains the composition of dental calculus, tells types and steps of formation, and explains the theories od formation.
5   5. Explains the periodontal pocket and its attachment and knows how to measure it.

3. Defines dental plaque biofilm, explains its importance, counts its types, formation stages and effective factors in formation.
