General Description

History

PhD in Musicology is founded in the end of 1970's, as a part of the Department of Musicology. The program involves courses in musicology as well as supporting courses in the art and theory of music.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines. Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first or second cycle (with thesis) cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. However, ALES requirement is waived for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs as well as for the admissions to the graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Transfer Students
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management
The Graduate Transfers
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs Legşilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in Graduate Transfer Guide and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam

2 years, 2 semesters per year, 15 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

Doctorate in Musicology program is primarily intended for students who hold a master s degree in Musicology and whose aim is to take action and responsibility with academic competence and specialty in the field of Musicology. The courses in the program are designed specifically to provide the students with a strong foundation in musicology academically.
There are 5 academic members in the department and a computer lab is also available for practical purposes.
Student Exchange and Student Mobility for Placement Programmes are being held in the frame of LLP/Erasmus.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   To explain the historical, theoretical, methodological aspects of Ethnomusicology.
2   To explain interdisciplinary structure of Ethnomusicology and the theoretical, procedural and methodological relationships between Ethnomusicology and other disciplines (anthropology, sociology, cultural studies etc.).
3   To identify the cultural, sociological, scientific and theoretical terminology and concepts in music, develop new concepts and terminology to contribute to his/her field of study.
4   To defend the importance and necessity of the ethnomusicological approach which aims to observe music in its cultural context.
5   To grasp the interdisciplinary interaction in order to reach new theory and synthesis.
6   To design and execute independent research projects as well as interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary projects.
7   To identify the methods and techniques which aim to gather and analyze the visual, aural and written data about music, develop and apply new ideas and techniques.
8   To benefit in an advanced level from the technological tools (computers, video cameras, cameras, recording devices etc.) which are used for recording, transcribing and analyzing music.
9   To present and report the results of a research project in written and verbal from in national and international scientific events.
10   To execute and manage academic discussions in his/her field of study.
11   To communicate verbally, visually and in written form using at least one foreign language as well as following the international literature in his/her field of study.
12   To apply and share the knowledge, skills and competences he/she gained in interdisciplinary research environments within a team.
13   To Efficiently use the academic teaching, evaluation and supervision skills in his/her field of study.
14   To Contribute to scientific improvement in national and international level while being open to new directions in science, internalizing the life-long learning principles and being aware of the sociological and cultural effects of musicological studies.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

The Doctoral Program in Musicology comprises mandatory and elective courses. Courses are scheduled to have a minimum of 30 ECTS credits each semester. Specialization area, seminar, and thesis work are included in ECTS calculations but are not counted towards local credits. A minimum of 7 courses, at least 21 local credits, and a minimum of 240 ECTS credits are required for graduation.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The regulations for examination and grading are arranged in the fourth part of DEU Graduate School of Fine Arts Educational and Examinational Regulations. The lowest grade to be successful in a credit course is 75. Detailed assessment methods and criteria for courses are explained in syllabi.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) program is comprised of at least 7 courses, not being less than 21 national credits, pasing a gualifiying examination, preparing and defending a doctoral dissertation, in total 240 ECTS credits.

Completion of the doctoral program requires the student to have at least one (1) scientific article related to their thesis published or officially accepted for publication in national/international refereed journals until the completion of their education. Additionally, the student must have presented their thesis-related research at least once in national/international refereed scientific events, either verbally, in writing, or visually. Alternatively, meeting the graduation requirement is possible if the University has submitted a national/international patent/utility model application related to the student's thesis, and the student has presented their thesis-related work at least once in national/international refereed scientific events, either verbally, in writing, or visually.

In the scientific publications, the student's affiliation should be indicated as Dokuz Eylül University (GSE), and the student should be listed among the first two authors. (Publication definitions specified in the principles and practices of promotion-appointment for DEÜ Faculty Membership are utilized for publications.)
