General Description

History

DEU Maritime Faculty was founded in Dokuz Eylul University to focus on maritime management. Main purpose of the faculty is supplying trained human resource for the demand of Turkish maritime industry. To train even more focused human resource for scientific research, publish scientific papers and for administrative staff and manager positions in industry, in 2005, Maritime Safety, Security and Environmental Management Master of Science without Thesis program has been launched under Deck Department of DEU Graduate School of Social Sciences and gave graduates two times. In 2009, the departments name became Marine Transportation Engineering. Currently, Department of Marinte Transportation Engineering has Maritime Safety, Security and Environmental Management MSc and PhD programs under the DEU Graduate School of Social Sciences.

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines, Transcript, Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first cycle cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. The exceptions to the requirements of ALES and Foreign Language Proficiency scores is announced by the Graduate School. However, ALES requirement is waived for the admissions to the second cycle graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test as well as for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

1,5 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 90 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

DEU Graduate School of Social Sciences, Department of Marine Transportation Engineering is a specialized education institute in the fields of Social sciences and with the MSc. Maritime Security, Safety and Environmental Management without Thesis program, it prepares managers for maritime industry within the context of maritime related interests of Türkiye and the philosophy of total quality, safety, security and environment management.
The Department is responsible for performing scientific research as projects, most of the projects are about port operations, environmental management and maritime efficiency. This program is in close contact with the industry and trains managers of the business. Courses are mostly based on management side of the whole maritime industry.
The fundamental aim is to provide the students with maritime traditions and commons, critical and analytical thinking, self-discipline, self-confidence, social responsibility, team working, lifelong learning, managerial and leadership qualifications. With this respect employee involvement and improvement of the quality of work life are the basic principles.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   In close contact with the recent developments in maritime issues, the learner improves and expands his/her knowledge, skills and attitudes at a mastering level; developing self-studying and life-long learning abilities and following the updated scientific, technological, social and cultural advances, gains a high level of discussing interpreting and assessing through critical out view.
2   Gains shipping related ethical, institutional, social and environmental responsibilities and values.
3   Provided with the knowledge and abilities to synthesize/analyze the shipping related developments and also with a vision of evaluating such developments through a third party view point, determining targets and strategies to reach these targets.
4   Provided with the knowledge effective enough to contribute to the quality management system practices related with shipping industry and also to exchange views in these issues including safety management techniques.
5   Has the ability carry out sea transport related maters individually, developed new strategic approaches enabling to solve unpredictable problems with a sense of responsibility to solve any lively problems.
6   With mastering level of information concerning international maritime conventions, national and international marine law, risk assessment and minimizing practices factors affecting maritime business processes, cargos carried ship security and crew safety assessment and environmental protection practices, the learner develops strategies, policies and implementation plans and evaluates the implementations from the point of quality management system.
7   Adopts and affective role in directing the practitioners and the stake holders through scientific work and activities and contributes the correct usage of maritime/ shipping related terminology.
8   Gains and advances level of motivation-related knowledge along with effective means of communication and producing, improving and changing norms where needed with a high level of leading qualification.
9   Abilities to design and apply models based on experimental research and to interpret and solve unpredictable shipping problems.
10   Acts in compliance with and shoulders role in proper applications of work safety rules and as well as professional standards concerning the main and side fields of sea transport.
11   Gets able to apply diverse research methods on sea transport and maritime business, having acquired the interdisciplinary relations, and doing so, able to support the research findings through qualitative as well as quantitative data, interpret them through information process skills, produce new knowledge and share it with related parties and national and international platforms.
12   Gains the ability and competence improved enough to take active roles in national and international as well as private and/or public sectors related with sea transport issues.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates of Master of Science in Maritime Security, Safety and Environmental Management without Thesis are employed in positions related to their mastery as managers of shipping, sea craft and off shore platforms, in management positions of marina, port or other similar coastal facilities, or as designers or administrators of projects like waterways, canals or passages, as specialists in seamen health and work safety, maritime insurance, cargo operations, logistical services, dangerous cargo transportation, ship fleet management, ship brokering and chartering, maritime insurance and P&I, cargo and cargo handling processes or as shipping agents or in management positions in agencies, as maritime law enforces, freelance advisors for ship or coastal facilities related to marine transportation engineering procedures and equipment, and also as public servants in Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, Ministry of National Education and as academicians in Public Universities.

Graduates may apply to the related employment positions in their area of specialization.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) Non-Thesis Program is comprised of courses (at least 87 ECTS), Term Project (3 ECTS), in total 90 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/ S / TP grades.
