General Description

History

European Union Law Master s Degree Program was established in 2002 within the Department of Public Law in D.E.Ü. According to the Regulation of Graduate Studies article 16, the purpose of the Master's degree is to, provide to the students the ability to access to information by carrying out research, to evaluate and interpret the information. Accordingly, the aim of the program is to specialize graduates of Law Faculty in the field of European Union Law.

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines, Transcript, Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first cycle cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. The exceptions to the requirements of ALES and Foreign Language Proficiency scores is announced by the Graduate School. However, ALES requirement is waived for the admissions to the second cycle graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test as well as for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

2 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 120 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

The objective of this program is to have expert lawyers who internalize universal legal principles, have an expert level of evaluating and analyzing legal disputes of European Union Law. Following, researching, analyzing recent national and international developments and solving legal disputes and conflicts, having an ability of legal reasoning by comparative and critical thinking through this specialized education process. The language of the programme is Turkish.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   By deepening and advancing the knowledge of European Union Law and doing a scientific research, he/she can access, interpret and put into effect the information.
2   By using the data in the field of European Law, he/she can improve her/his information by scientific methods and use this information with social and ethical responsibility.
3   Interpreting the issues and problems of European Union Law with cultural, historical, social and legal dimensions and offering solutions to the problems of European Union.
4   Conveying and sharing her/his studies and the recent developments in field of European Union Law with the people who are/aren t interested in these subjects by using written and visual ways efficiently.
5   Working with social studies groups and other groups that are involved with the disciplines of European Union Law.
6   Applying the knowledge and the ability of problem solving gained during this program to interdisciplinary studies.
7   By combining the knowledge of European Union Law with other disciplines, creating new information and solving the disputes scientifically.
8   Having the competency of interpreting European Union Law knowledge critically, guiding the learning and performing advanced level studies individually.
9   Improving new approaches to the complicated problems of European Union Law and creating solutions by taking a responsibility.
10   Having the competency of utilizing the methodology of law to solve the legal disputes and problems of European Union Law.
11   Being aware of the professional, social and academic ethical principles.
12   Having the ability of using the information and communication technologies at a required level.
13   Having a competency of using at least one foreign language with oral/written forms.
14   Analyzing the legal acquis of European Union and the relations between European Union and Turkey.
15   Analyzing and solving the problems concerning European Union Law and evaluating these conclusions.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

European Union Law Postgraduate Programme with thesis obligates 2 must (one of them in the first semester, and the other in the second semester ) 5 elective (three of them in the first semester, two of them in the second period ) courses. There are 17 elective courses for two semesters. All elective courses are offered by the Department of EU Studies. There is no pool of must or selective courses offered by the University. There are no prerequisite courses. All the courses are based on semester credit system.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Evaluation and assessment methods for each course is defined in the the Course Description Form which is prepared by related faculty member / s and included in the information package. Exams and course success notes is subject to the relevant articles of the DEU Regulation on Graduate Education.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Masters Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 53 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS) and field study (4 ECTS) and thesis (60 ECTS), in total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/ S / TP grades.
