Course Objective

Examine the lives of Turkish women, their representation in the political arena, and their political rights during the political transformations in Turkey from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic.
Relate the changing political structures to feminist theory and explain the processes of change and transformation.
Define political institutions and women's rights from a gender perspective.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Evaluate the impact of political change processes in Turkey from the Ottoman Empire to the present day on the position of women in politics from a historical perspective.
2   Interpret political transformation processes in Turkey and the accompanying social change.
3   Analyze political transformation processes in Turkey and public policies from a critical perspective in terms of women's rights and equality principles.
4   Evaluate the rate of women's participation in politics at the local and national levels from the Ottoman Empire to the present day in relation to political transformation processes.
5   Relate the approach to women in party programs to political transformation in Turkey.

6 The search for women's rights in the political arena of the Republic

8 The transition to a multi-party system and women's representation
9 Women in local and national politics from the Democratic Party to the 1960 coup
10 Women in politics during the 1971 memorandum and the 1980 coup
11 The women's movement after 1980 and political transformation in Turkey
12 The women's movement and politics in the 1990s
13 Political parties, women's branches, quotas (from 1923 to the present)
