Course Objective

To teach the kinds of natural dyes used in dyeing and printing, their differences from synthetic dyes, extraction methods, dyeing properties, traditional/ecological natural dyeing methods and applications, to study current scientific researches.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   define kinds of natural dyes and their differences from synthetic dyes
2   define application opportunities of natural dyestuffs in artistic and unique works.
3   define extraction methods of natural dyes, mordants, traditional and ecological application methods of natural dyes
4   dye by using conventional and novel natural dyes and to report these applications
5   evaluate current scientific developments on natural dyeing.

1 Introduction to natural dyeing,history, development process, its place and importance in artistic and unique works.
2 Differences between synthetics and natural dyes, advantages and disadvantages of natural dyes, homework topics to review the last scientific researches
3 Laboratory facilities, introducing necessary devices and materials for natural dyeing, analysis methods for natural dyes, UV-Vis. spectrometer
4 Natural dye sources, their production, extraction methods, applications with natural and synthetic fibers.
5 Mordants, methods of mordanting and application
6 Obtaining different color gamuts by practising different natural dyes
7 Obtaining different color gamuts by practising different natural dyes
8 Obtaining different color gamuts by practising different natural dyes
9 Obtaining different color gamuts by practising different natural dyes
10 Obtaining different color gamuts by practising different natural dyes
