Course Objective

This course aims to examine travelogues as source material in cultural anthropology and folklore studies. The focus will be on analyzing elements such as folk beliefs, rites of passage, everyday practices, celebrations, and folk medicine as reflected in travel accounts. The course will also critically address the historical contexts, purposes, power dynamics, and publication practices of travel writing.

1   Understands how to use travelogues in cultural analysis.
2   Identifies folk culture elements in travel accounts.
3   Analyzes the historical and ideological contexts of travel writing.
4   Compares travelogues written about different geographies.
5   Learns methods of ethnographic data collection through travel writing.
