Course Objective

The aim of this course is to examine both the biological and cultural aspects of language from an interdisciplinary perspective; to analyze how language developed as a human-specific faculty, its functioning in the brain, and its interaction with social structure and culture.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To learn about the biological basis of language and its place in human evolution.
2   To understand the relationship between language and the structure and functioning of the brain.
3   To discuss the influence of culture on the development and diversification of language.
4   To evaluate the interaction between the biological and cultural dimensions of language.
5   To understand the differences between human and animal communication systems.
