Course Objective

The 20th century was an era of profound political, social and cultural upheaval two world wars, the exile of many intellectuals, the division of Germany and reunification have had a lasting impact on German-language literature. In this seminar, we will look at the most important literary movements of the century: from literary modernism to exile literature, the so-called rubble literature of the post-war period, literature in the GDR and FRG as well as postmodernism and the present.
Using exemplary texts by authors such as Franz Kafka, Bertolt Brecht, Ingeborg Bachmann, Heinrich Böll, Christa Wolf, Elfriede Jelinek and W. G. Sebald, central themes such as identity, memory, language, political responsibility and aesthetic innovation are analysed.
